Brooklyn prosecutors clear local ACORN office

A four-month investigation by the Brooklyn district attorney found no evidence that the local ACORN office had engaged in any criminal conduct, despite the hype conservative media gave to tapes of a fake prostitute asking for help from the organization.
From Brooklyn prosecutors clear local ACORN office - War Room - Salon.com

The whole ACORN Pimp story has been reviled as fraud, and the perpetrator of that fraud was caught trying to bug the office of US Senator. So where are the corrections? How much time has FOX spent on corrections to the story?

Blame the childish, ignorant American public

There's nothing wrong with changing your mind, of course, but opinion polls over the last year reflect something altogether more troubling: a country that simultaneously demands and rejects action on unemployment, deficits, health care, climate change, and a whole host of other major problems. Sixty percent of Americans want stricter regulations of financial institutions. But nearly the same proportion says we're suffering from too much regulation on business. That kind of illogic—or, if you prefer, susceptibility to rhetorical manipulation—is what locks the status quo in place.
From Blame the childish, ignorant American public—not politicians—for our political and economic crisis. - By Jacob Weisberg - Slate Magazine

I just got around to reading this. The headline should be Media fails to take blame for misinformed public. I don't want to single out Mr. Weisberg here but anyone who works in the media should be helping inform the public or discussing why the media is doing a bad job at informing the public of matters not related to the smoke monster on lost. They shouldn't be blaming people for not helping the media do its job.

Which Countries Don’t Belong With The Others?

Can we change already? Seriously? This isn't a difficult transition. The medical, high-tech research and manufacturing segments already use metric.

Richard Feynman explains magnets sort of. From kottke

I love the way Feynman explains science. He expresses the pure joy present in the process of figuring things out.

One thought on the iPad

It is thoroughly disappointing to think of what a wonderful platform the iPad would be for a programming environment like Scratch and how unlikely it is that Apple will update its developer agreements to allow Scratch to run on the iPad.

Scratch on the iPad could be BASIC for a whole new generation of kids.

The Dangerous Book for Boys Classic Chemistry

An honest to goodness chemistry kit that you can use to make stink bombs and smoke bombs. I bought Dangerous Book for Boys for my son before he was born. Nice to see they are using that as a brand for the kind of toys they don't make anymore.

System FAIL

"GOP member: 'I'd like this in the bill.'
"Dem member response: 'If we put it in, will you vote for the bill?'
"GOP member:  'You know I can't vote for the bill.'
"Dem member:  'Then why should we put it in the bill?'
From System FAIL - The Daily Dish | By Andrew Sullivan

This is a clear example of what is going wrong in our system. When a party enforces applied nihilism as a political tactic you end up with deadlock. And this deadlock isn't even seen as the means to another a different end. The deadlock is the point.

Soros on Gold

everyone at the lunch wanted to know what bubbles the billionaire might be investing in at the moment, given his theory. Soros dodged the question when I asked him but subsequently noted, "The ultimate asset bubble is gold." I'm not sure if he meant that gold has been a bubble since the beginning of recorded history or just a bubble over the past couple of years. He never shows too much of his hand.
From Soros on Gold

Two things came to mind reading this. Soros is usually right. And this is scary. I can assume that when he says something like this; he then disappears leaving only a creepy smile floating in the air.

Worthwhile Canadian Example

Those who blame the Fed for keeping interest rates too low too long have to explain why Canada, which basically had the same interest rate experience we did, didn’t have anything like the same problems. So what’s Canada’s secret? Regulation, regulation, regulation. Much stricter limits on leverage, much stricter limits on unconventional mortgages, and an independent consumer protection agency for borrowers.
From Worthwhile Canadian Example - Paul Krugman Blog - NYTimes.com

Someone should explain The Austrian Business cycle to the Canadians. Clearly their stability is impossible and is likely a commie plot.

One odd thing about health care reform

If people are against the health care bill because it is too progressive, why did it get less popular as it got less progressive? And why is the version of the bill with the public option more popular than the bill without it? If people are upset that it does too far, shouldn't it have gotten more popular as it was watered down to do less?

the spending freeze

In his State of the Union address Wednesday night, President Obama will unveil a three-year freeze on non-military discretionary spending, according to a senior administration official.

The spending freeze is exactly what the GOP has been asking for. So what do you think are the chances that they will be positive about this? What are the chances that this will lead to some tiny bit of bipartisanship? I'm going to guess zero. This spending freeze will be spun to attack Obama on something. Probably something trivial, irrelevant or flat out hypocritical.
